6 months with HoloLens

Wavelength LLC has been working with the developer edition of Microsoft’s “Mixed RealityHoloLens device for about 6 months now. All we do as a company/tribe is work on creating holographic type experiences. Our blog posts and perspectives are from the point of actual customer engagements and projects.

Below are the top 5 pluses and limitations.

Pluses:

  1. Real world scale 3D objects you can walk around or through.
  2. Extremely minimal issues with nausea or hot claustrophobic experiences like Virtual Reality. We have seen none.
  3. Hands free viewing of digital data or 3D objects. Valuable for simulations for training or viewing data while needing your hands.
  4. Shared experiences where you interact with characters, peers or friends as you would interact as humans do (mostly).
  5. Likely the way we interact with all data and virtual objects for a very long time.

Limitations:

  1. The field of view. We want more of it but we can find projects that fit what it is today.
  2. Sometimes tricky to fit. Gets easier the more you do it.
  3. Mastering of gestures (how you “click” things with your hands) is needed.
  4. Costly but reasonable if you find projects with ROI (return on investment).
  5. Limited software applications created to date. We and other great developers are working hard to fix this.

You might wonder why a company trying to gather interest from business would list the limits of the device. The reason is simple, we want to create successful HoloLens experiences. We want to build trust. Just because the device has limits, as all devices do, doesn’t mean it is a bad device or that it can’t do many things well. But hiding these limits only fosters projects that are more likely to fail.

Stay tuned for in-depth details on our projects.
